This year Gecamin and Sustainable Minerals Institute have initiated the series of Enviromine seminars. The first one, held in October in Santiago, sparked interest of over 260 delegates from 18 countries. Unique collection of individuals from diverse backgrounds made the Seminar a truly enriching experience.

Mining, undoubtedly one of the most profitable industries in the world, has its toll on the land, water, air and people. Papers, presented during the seminar, discussed case studies, success stories and possible solutions to how these undesirable effects can be predicted, controlled, reduced and off-set. A good balance of science and non-scientific perspectives made it possible for everyone to get involved in the discussions and questions-and-answers sessions.

Enviromine seminars will now take place every two years. Next year Gecamin will be hosting Water in Mining 2010 Congress and V International Conference on Mine Closure – Mine Closure 2010 .

We were proud to host the first Enviromine 2009 in Chile and welcome over 260 delegates to Santiago. It is interesting to note that vast majority of the participants were highly specialised environmental professionals - something we have never seen before at our other related events. This seminar was created in response to the industry's need to meet and discuss the latest findings on prediction, prevention and control of the environmental impacts.

The growing expectations of the community for environmental protection, more demanding environmental regulations and competing land use represent important challenges for the viability of mining activities. Mining practice has evolved to reflect these concerns. In response the industry has introduced management policies and practices and adopted technologies to reduce and minimise environmental impacts of mining operations.

The correct prediction, prevention and control of environmental impacts of mining operations require the design and development of new methodologies and innovative technologies. Even though important effort has been undertaken by most operators, there is a need of constant improvement of environmental management throughout the mine life cycle, from the design stage to closure. Enviromine seminar series aspire to contribute to this continuous learning, training and education of managers and practitioners in sustainable development issues.

A fantastic technical programme has been put together thanks to the efforts of the authors and reviewers. During the three days delegates were able to hear over 50 presentations on su stainability and environmental design of mining projects, risk assessment, impact assessment and forecasting, best environmental practices, sustainable water management, effluent treatment, remediation and rehabilitation of minesites. The programme also included a discussion forum on social issues, a unique opportunity for everyone to share their concerns with keynote speakers and colleagues from many different countries.

We thank sponsors for their generous support and everyone involved in the organisation of this seminar. We hope you enjoyed technical sessions as well as the social functions, and believe that with your enthusiasm and support the Enviromine seminar series will become a wonderful long-lasting tradition.
